First aid for a boiling water scald: the first 20 minutes

Hold the scald under cool running water for a full 20 minutes, remove rings, watches and any loose soaked clothing, then cover loosely with cling film. Avoid ice, butter and creams, which either deepen the injury or trap heat and make assessment harder. If the skin has also been cut or split, the wound may need closing as well as dressing.

When a boiling water scald needs a doctor

Boiling water scalds often look superficial on day one and declare their true depth by day three. Book a same-day review if the scald is larger than your palm, blistered, on the hands, face, feet or genitals, or if pain is increasing after 24 hours. Surgeon-led review, the right burn dressing and a planned 48 hour check give the best chance of quick healing with minimal scarring. Deeper or larger burns are managed under our wider burn service.
