Concerned About Your Hair Transplant Recovery?

Some redness, crusting, tenderness and mild swelling can occur as part of normal recovery after FUE or FUT surgery, and most people settle over the first few weeks. You may benefit from a medical assessment if your symptoms seem excessive, are getting worse rather than better, or differ from the instructions given to you by your transplant clinic.

A doctor-led review can confirm whether what you are seeing is compatible with expected healing, or whether wound care, treatment or onward referral is needed.

Increasing redness
Increasing pain or tenderness
Pus or discharge
Unpleasant smell
Persistent bleeding
Marked swelling
Fever or feeling unwell
Donor-site wound problems
Sutures requiring removal
Poor or delayed wound healing
Concern about infection
Uncertainty about whether recovery is normal

If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening or associated with significant systemic illness, please seek urgent NHS or emergency medical care. Dr SOS is not an emergency department.

Post-Hair-Transplant Problems We Assess

Each appointment begins with a clinical assessment. Treatment may include wound care, dressings, suture removal or medication where clinically appropriate, with onward referral where required.

FUE Donor-Site Assessment

Review of healing, redness, inflammation, discharge, pain and other donor-area concerns.

FUT Wound & Scar Assessment

Assessment of the linear donor wound following FUT surgery, including healing and wound-related concerns.

Suspected Infection

Clinical assessment where infection is suspected following hair-transplant surgery.

Suture Removal

Removal of appropriate scalp sutures following FUT or other surgical procedures when clinically appropriate.

Swelling & Inflammation

Assessment of unexpected or persistent swelling and inflammation following treatment.

Bleeding & Wound Problems

Assessment of persistent bleeding, wound breakdown or other post-operative wound concerns.

Recipient-Area Assessment

Clinical assessment of concerning redness, inflammation, crusting, discharge or healing problems affecting the transplanted area.

Post-Operative Review

Independent medical review for patients concerned about their recovery or unable to return promptly to their original clinic.

Related services: wound care in London, infected wound treatment, stitch and suture removal, private stitches and abscess incision and drainage where a collection has formed.

Had Your Hair Transplant Abroad?

Many patients travel overseas for hair-transplant surgery and return to the UK shortly afterwards. If a post-operative problem develops, returning to the original surgical team may not be practical.

Dr SOS can provide an independent medical assessment of suitable post-hair-transplant concerns in London, including donor-site wounds, suspected infection, inflammation, bleeding, suture removal and delayed healing.

Dr SOS does not replace the operating surgeon's planned routine follow-up. Where appropriate, we may recommend contacting the original surgical team or refer you to another specialist service.

Where possible, please bring

  • Discharge documentation
  • Procedure details
  • Medication list
  • Post-operative instructions
  • Details of the transplant clinic
  • Photographs showing how the problem has progressed

Come anyway if you do not have paperwork. We will assess what we can and advise on next steps.

FUE and FUT Post-Operative Care

The aftercare concerns differ depending on how the grafts were harvested. Dr SOS does not perform hair-transplant surgery; we assess and care for the wounds afterwards.

FUE

Follicular Unit Extraction aftercare

Assessment of donor-site healing, follicular extraction sites, inflammation, redness, discharge, swelling and other wound concerns.

FUT

Follicular Unit Transplantation aftercare

Assessment of the donor incision, wound healing, sutures, inflammation, infection concerns and scar-related problems. Scalp sutures can be taken out here when clinically appropriate; see stitch and suture removal.

Post-Hair Transplant Care - Frequently Asked Questions

Some redness, crusting and mild tenderness is common in the early weeks after FUE or FUT surgery. Redness that is increasing, spreading, painful or accompanied by discharge, swelling or fever is not expected and is worth a medical assessment.
